I wasn’t planning on writing a full, in-depth product review of the Cotton Carrier G3 Camo Harness. There are more than likely plenty of those already out there. Instead, I just wanted to share a few thoughts on a piece of kit that has become an essential part of my wildlife photography setup. Sometimes the bits of equipment that make the biggest difference aren’t the cameras or lenses, but the accessories that make getting out into the field that little bit easier.
Every photographer has that one piece of equipment they wouldn’t want to be without, and for me, it’s the CCS G3 Camo Harness.
When I bought mine, I actually opted for the CCS G3 Camo Harness Binocular and Camera version. This comes with a detachable extra holster, giving me the flexibility to carry both my camera and binoculars when I’m out looking for wildlife. I also ordered an additional Camera/Lens Mount Hub, which means I can quickly swap between different camera and lens combinations without having to move the hub from one setup to another. It just makes life that little bit easier when I’m getting ready to head out. Design wise I went for the Camo option over the Grey to help blend naturally into my surroundings.
My Wildlife Photography Setup
My main wildlife photography setup is a Canon EOS R7 paired with the Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM, and the harness carries this combination with ease. Even with a longer lens attached, it feels secure and well-balanced, which gives me confidence when I’m covering longer distances on foot.
Before I bought it, I always carried my camera on a standard neck strap. It did the job, but I never really liked having my camera swinging around as I walked. It would constantly bang against my leg, get caught on gates and branches, and always seemed to be in the way when I was trying to enjoy a walk in the countryside.
The first time I used the CCS G3 Harness, I knew I wouldn’t be going back.
The harness keeps my camera snug against my chest, so it stays secure while I’m walking, but it’s still right there when I need it. With a simple twist-and-lock system I can go from hands free to ready-to-shoot in seconds. It gives me complete peace of mind knowing my camera isn’t swinging about or at risk of getting knocked every few steps.
The Freedom of Being Hands-Free
One of the biggest benefits for me is being hands-free. Wildlife photography often means scrambling over stiles, opening gates, climbing uneven paths or simply trying to keep your balance on muddy ground. Having both hands available makes all of that so much easier. Then, during the colder months, I can keep my hands tucked away in my pockets to stay warm without worrying about what my camera is doing.
Comfort on Long Walks
Comfort is another big plus. Even on longer walks, the weight feels much better distributed than it ever did with a neck strap, making the whole experience far more enjoyable.
Final Thoughts
It’s funny how some bits of photography gear become favourites without you really noticing. The CCS G3 Harness is one of those items for me. It isn’t the most exciting purchase you’ll ever make, but it’s one that has genuinely changed the way I carry my camera. It’s become such a natural part of my kit that I don’t even think about packing it anymore—it’s simply coming with me.
If you spend any amount of time walking in search of wildlife, I’d thoroughly recommend giving it a look. It may not help you find more wildlife, but it’ll certainly make carrying your camera far more comfortable while you’re looking.
